I did some searches on Google on “How IEEE grow young leaders,” and guess what - I don’t see a prominent programs with these keywords, a lot of “Young Professionals,” activities came up. These keywords on my campaign page also came up.
Well, there are many aspects of these questions. Of course, it would relate to the process of “growing” yourself when you volunteer for IEEE. Yes, I have that continuing “growing” experience when I got appointed on several volunteer/leadership positions. I learn a lot of technical, cross-functional, leadership skills by doing! More organizational units (OUs) I work with, I learn more aspects of IEEE - broad knowledge of many OUs and in-depth knowledge of the Region 10. That’s how I think of the way for a collaborative partnership.
But if you are students, young professionals, WIE, or the newer volunteers who just joined IEEE or IEEE Excom, what do you need from IEEE, and especially, Region 10, to help grow yourself? IEEE has an excellent program called Volunteer Leadership Training (VoLT) program (in which application is opened by July 17 for 2020 program). IEEE Center of Leadership Excellence also has many e-learning courses. We see a lot of versions of the Leadership summit, especially for the WIE International Leadership Conference (WIE ILC) and many regional versions of the WIE Leadership summit. This is learning by the best examples of leadership. Another important factor is to have a mentor (I put mentorship on another priority). I am lucky that through my IEEE volunteering, I came across many good mentors who always support and guide me.
So let’s think about how Region 10 would do to “groom the young leaders to grow.” Of course, I have some ideas in mind but also would like to hear from you first.
